This lovely new flower blossomed on our Purple Passion Vine, the very plant that inspired us to take a leap of faith and plant it in the soil of Our Charming Backyard Butterfly Garden last year.
As beginner gardeners, we didn’t know if it would survive through winter. I couldn’t help but feel a little fearful as I watched it wither and lose its leaves. Still, I held on to hope it would bounce back after the extreme temperatures we experienced through the winter and spring.
We were over the moon to see it spring back to life blossoming into this healthy, vibrant Purple Passion Flower.

Passion feels like a burst of vibrant, unstoppable emotion. I wonder if this flower earned its name from the vast abundance of pollen and nectar it provides. It’s known as a super nectar source because pollinators get covered in pollen as they flutter in and around its sweet, multi-level nectary. And who knows, perhaps the pollinators feel their own version of passion while they pollinate and indulge in this beauty.

This vine needs pollination to bear fruit. So, with fingers crossed, we’re hopeful to see some Passion Fruit popping up in our garden in the next couple of weeks or so!
We’ve recently added over 20 new plants to Our Charming Backyard Butterfly Garden, including a delightful new variety called Blue Passion Vine.

We were so excited to discover a couple of caterpillars on the new vine we planted in our yard. When I realized they had hitched a ride in the car with me on the way home from the nursery, I couldn’t help but wonder what they thought of the whole experience. If only I had known earlier, I would have played some of our favorite music for them!
This is a promising indication of the vitality of the ecosystem around this plant.

A few days ago, this little beauty transformed into a chrysalis.

We found another little caterpillar who ventured off the vine onto the rocks we used to support the vine.

We were curious if it would find its way back onto the vine.

Later that day, we were thrilled to find it back on the vine happily feasting on some leaves. This discovery sparked a new idea to place rocks around these vines. Could it be that the rocks help them adjust to the outside environmental changes and temperatures? Who knows? All I can say is it brings us joy to uncover new things about them and their ecosystem!

We were also excited to welcome a new Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, also known as a Passion Butterfly, to our vine. She was busy laying her eggs on the leaves, which means more baby caterpillars for us to admire. This Passion vine is bursting with natural goodness and beauty! Our passion for this vine just keeps growing!
