“Caterpillars are Chameleons?”

May 2024 Black Swallowtail Caterpillars on our Rue

Absolutely! It’s fascinating to watch them constantly change colors. Science tells us they do this to blend into their surroundings and evade predators. Apart from the scientific aspect, a couple of things have piqued my interest. Keep in mind, I’ve left these little fellows in their natural outdoor environment to observe how they adapt to the changing seasons and the various weather conditions that come with it.

Last winter, I made a point to observe them before and after any severe weather struck. I kept a keen eye on them, curious to see how they fared through it all.

As temperatures drop, they gradually slow down, almost burrowing into a sleepy state. Their colors become dimmer and darker.

But when the sun emerges, they spring back to life, basking on a limb and soaking up the warmth with a radiant colorful glow. Suddenly, they’re bustling about happily munching away.

Hold on! There’s another reason why they’re chameleons.

Did you notice, it’s slightly turning green through its abdomen?

When we see them turn green, it’s a clear sign that it’s literally gearing up to pupate. I’m grateful for its chameleon-like ability, which allows it to communicate with us in such a colorful way. Now that we know it’s ready to form into a chrysalis it will leave the plant roaming around the yard looking for the exact location.

I really hope the little caterpillar decides to choose a spot for us to observe instead of playing hide and seek like last year. But you know what? I don’t mind the game at all. It’s incredibly thrilling because this will mark our first chrysalis for 2024!

I’ve discovered a newfound peace while documenting these amazing creatures ever since I faced my fear of using our fancy new camera this year. It’s been totally worth the learning curve in photography to experience the sheer joy of getting an even closer and clearer view of these adorable caterpillars!
